Monsanto, often called the “city of stone,” has origins dating back to the early Stone Age. However, the village as we know it today was not constructed until the late 12th century. Recognized as one of the twelve most historic villages in Portugal, Monsanto proudly displays the Silver Rooster on its clock tower as a symbol of this prestigious award.

The area’s earliest settlements, located at the base of the mountain, trace back to Roman times. The large granite boulders atop the mountain deterred earlier construction efforts. It wasn’t until the mid-1100s, when Portugal’s first king entrusted the area to the Order of the Knights Templar, that construction of the fortress at the summit began. The village below was later built around the massive granite boulders, creating a unique and charming setting.

With its fascinating history, remarkable fortress ruins, and welcoming village atmosphere, Monsanto is truly worth a visit.
