Tour Information

Tomar and Almourol – Knights Templar Tour

Step back in time to early medieval Portugal and the mysterious era of the Knights Templar.

Walk in the footsteps of the Knights Templar, a secretive order that played a significant role in Portuguese history. Protected by King Dinis in the 1300s, the order went underground, changed its name, and became instrumental in the Age of Discovery. This tour takes you to some of their most significant strongholds and sacred sites.

We begin at Almourol Castle, a 12th-century stronghold along the Tejo River. Dating back to Roman times, this sacred fortress is located on a small island and can only be accessed by boat. While today’s “password” is a few euros, in Templar times, entry required a sacred word known only to a select few.

Next, we visit the medieval city of Tomar, the Knights Templar’s initial refuge in Portugal. Here, we explore the magnificent Castle and Convent of Christ, the hidden chapel, and wander through the medieval streets of Tomar, where the legacy of these mighty knights is woven into the fabric of Portuguese history and still resonates in daily life today.
