Fátima, Portugal
Fátima’s history is intertwined with the sighting of the Virgin Mary and a spectacular event known as the Miracle of the Sun. Today, Fátima is a world-renowned pilgrimage destination, drawing visitors from across the globe.
Santiago de Compostela, Spain
According to tradition, the remains of the Apostle James (San Tiago) were brought to Galicia, where they now rest in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, just north of the Portuguese border. During the Roman persecution of Christians in Hispania during the 3rd century, the tomb was abandoned and remained undiscovered until the 9th century.
Legend tells of a hermit named Pelayo (Pelagius) who, guided by mysterious lights in the night sky, discovered the tomb. This miraculous event led the church to pronounce it a holy site, and a chapel was built. Seventy years later, a larger church was constructed, followed by the current cathedral in 1075.
