Monsanto, city of stone, dates back to the early Stone Age period itself. Yet this beautiful and highly unique village in the Northeastern sector of Portugal was not actually constructed until late in the 12th century. It is classified as one of the top twelve most historic villages in the country and the city’s clock-tower boasts the image of the Silver Rooster in acknowledgment of this prestigious award. The region’s more current settlement dates back to Roman times which was at the base of the mountain. Due to the large boulders atop the mountain they did not try to build up higher. Later Visigoths and Moors settled the same region and in the 12th century, King Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, conquered the region as part of the Christian recapturing the Iberian Peninsula. In 1165, he granted custody of the city to the Order of Knights Templar who began construction on the fortress at the top. The village below was constructed around the granite boulders much later. Unfortunately, the medieval castle was destroyed in the nineteenth century due to an explosion. However, the remains of the fortress and the incredibly unique, charming and friendly village is worth the visit.
